Zojirushi Rice Cooker

Published by VeganCauldron on October 6th, 2011

Who would have guessed that a rice cooker would make a difference in what seemingly appears to be a very simple item to cook. Just stick it in a pan with boiling water and there you go! Boy is that ever wrong. Up until now we used to buy the cheap $20 – $30 rice cookers at Canadian Tire and they worked ok but never stopped annoying me. The spray of starchy water and inconsistent results really didn’t make me want to make rice too often. Luckily (in retrospect) our rice cooker broke, so last weekend we went to Markham to see what the Asian shops were selling. We ended up buying a Zojirushi rice cooker.

Now the rice turns out perfect every time and it’s as if we were at a restaurant. It sounds funny to say but it has totally changed the way we prepare food because now we actually want to have rice every night and choose vegetables accordingly every day. Changing things up can get tricky, but it makes it a bit more like a game to prepare dinner now.

Here’s a picture of the rice cooker we chose:

So if you’re in the market for a new rice cooker, I definitely recommend investing in one of these bad boys. You won’t regret it!

It’s been a while

Published by VeganCauldron on September 13th, 2011

So I haven’t blogged in a couple months and I really don’t have any reason for it. Sometimes it’s just hard to find inspiration or to take the time to sit down and write. To be honest, it’s also difficult to feel relevant or to not feel like I’m rambling.

All in all I had a wonderful summer and am feeling great! It’s funny how I used to be shy about being veg, but now I love living our vegan lifestyle. I love knowing that I am making a difference even if it’s a tiny one. Everything helps right?

I hope this will give me a bit more inspiration to write more often from now on!

A quick run through of random events such as recycled art in Montreal’s Eaton Centre:

Chex cereal finally came to Canada!

Published by VeganCauldron on June 27th, 2011

As the subject line says, Chex cereal finally came to Canada! This is exciting for me because there really aren’t many options for gluten free cereals, and out of the few options most aren’t the most appetizing. Up to this point we’ve been driving down to Buffalo to get Chex but it was honestly a bit silly to drive so far just for cereal. Though we’re always looking for a reason to get away.

Summer’s best drink

Published by VeganCauldron on June 16th, 2011

I’ve come to love making lemonade every day so far this summer. My favourite way to make it is quite simple:

1) Squeeze 2 limes and 1 lemon.

2) Two tablespoons of Agave syrup (or nectar)

3) Add water, shake and enjoy!

Now get out and enjoy the nice weather!

Maca – The wonder plant?

Published by VeganCauldron on June 13th, 2011

Maca, otherwise known as Lepidium meyenii has been used for over 2000 years for medical and nutritional reasons.

I only recently heard about maca and the more I looked into it the more amazing it appears to be. Is there really such a magical plant that can bring so much good? The recommended dosage is 2.5 g per day, which doesn’t mean you can’t go over the dosage but it flattens out at that point so it’s not really worth it. Reading the wikipedia page about maca does show some worrying side effects though:

Though this is common in other foods with high levels of glucosinolate, it is uncertain if maca consumption can cause or worsen a goiter. Maca has been shown to reduce enlarged prostate glands in rats.

I realize that it’s still uncertain and it probably only affects a minority so it’s best not to focus on the minute chances of something happening, but it’s still a good idea to keep it in minde.

The best way to start your day

Published by VeganCauldron on April 11th, 2011

One of the most difficult things about being gluten free and vegan is to ensure I’m getting all the essential nutrients I need for the day. I usually bring a lunch for work and make myself dinner when I get home. Since my diet’s already difficult enough as it is, the last thing I want to worry about is making sure that all the minerals/vitamines/calcium/etc is included in the food I choose. Sure I try to, but it’s not always possible.

What I have come up with is making a smoothie using Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer. I personally enjoy the Chocolate the most, along with a handful of strawberries and some almond milk.

Vega was developed by Brendan Brazier who is a successful triathlete from Vancouver, British Columbia. As a triathlete he found it difficult to find enough plant protein to keep his athletic performance up to par. This is where the idea for Vega started. The whole story can be read here: The Vega Story.

My wife @LidiaLF and I both read Brendan’s book The Thrive Diet, which I highly recommend to everyone, even if you’re not vegan.

The folks at Vega were nice enough to send me a few samples. If anybody’s interested, email me at: mathieu [at] greenveglife [dot] com.

Quinoa: A vegan superfood

Published by VeganCauldron on January 31st, 2011

For those who are wondering how to get more protein in their diet, it’s important to look for complete proteins. Examples of a complete protein are: soybeans, amaranth, buckwheat, hempseed and of course quinoa. The main reason I’m focusing on quinoa is that I find it very underrated, but deserves more attention due to it being so healthy and flavourful.

Split Pea Soup

Published by VeganCauldron on January 23rd, 2011

In the past month or two, I’ve finally started to appreciate split pea soup. I know I’m far behind the times, but hey there’s so much great food out there it’s hard to get around to it all! (That’s my excuse anyway).
